Story is always the most fundamental part of my design process, so it was great getting a good understanding of the history before I began to explore visual ideas.
As I started to uncover the past I knew I had to consider the perspectives of the Killer, the Police, and the victims and their families. But the deeper I dug I began to wonder about the landscape and internal struggles of the everyday individual living in the area at that time. I thought a lot about what an everyday neighborhood in 1970’s California was like. A simpler time, interrupted by a terror they had never known. In a time when the internet and 24 hour news outlets didn’t exist, the lack of up-to-the-minute information must have spread an unsettling fear throughout each Court and Cul-de-sac in California as victims continued to mount.
Suddenly I had an unusually clear idea of what I wanted to pitch - the idea that this man terrorized by “spreading over the landscape like a virus”. Thankfully, the show runners responded really well and we were off and running.
